Biographical Information

Horacio Dante Espinosa is the James and Nancy Farley Professor of Manufacturing and Entrepreneurship, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering, and the Director of the Theoretical and Applied Mechanics Program at the McCormick School of Engineering, Northwestern University. He received his Ph.D. in Solid Mechanics from Brown University. He is a foreign member of Academia Europaea, the European Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Russian Academy of Engineering. He is a Fellow of AAAS, AAM, ASME, and SEM. His research has focused on deformation and failure of materials, micro- and nano-systems, and microfluidics for single cell gene editing and analysis. Espinosa received numerous awards and honors including the Prager Medal from the Society of Engineering Science, the Murray and Sia-Nemat Nasser Medals from the Society for Experimental Mechanics, the Thurston award from ASME, and the Hetenyi and Lazan awards from SEM. He was President of SES in 2012, and currently serves in the National Academies-U.S. National Committee on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and the IUTAM congress committee. He also served in the National Academies Panel on Materials Science and Engineering to advise the Army Research Lab.
